A Tragic Mask

I sit up in bed
in the pre-dawn light
and watch you dream
I wonder what dreams
you have
that could make your face
such a tragic mask
of fear and rage
I want to touch you
to wake you
from your nightmare
and let you know
it’s all okay
but I’m afraid to reach out
in case you mistake me
for the monster
of your nightmare
and hurt me
again
