Old Lady Eyes
On her head lay a beige
Wide rimmed hat, dotted with
Cherry colored flora
Locks of honey ringlets
Spilled out from underneath
Dimples creased her rosy cheeks
Baby blue eyes peeked, animated
Bright, from underneath shy lashes
But today, the sun didn’t grace
Her with exquisite light
Her head ducked, eyebrows
Furrowing, as if in thought
She sat on the creaking, wooden pew
Dispirited, her head bowed
Her small hands clasped, reverent
Murmurs escaped her lips
Getting louder with each word
Raising her hand, she viciously
Took off her hat, tossing it across the church
And when her eyes were unshielded,
Her baby blue eyes glimmered from
Innocence to weary to old
And old lady’s eyes
Frail from seeing too much
Clear with wisdom, shadowed with pain
