Solitary Mind
What does one know of freedom?
Is it waking in the middle of the night
in an empty bed?
Is it eating meals
at a table set for one?
Is it taking a drive in the country
with no one at your side?
Or is it empty halls
echoing your solitary mind?
Is it listening to music
with a jug for a friend?
Or looking at four walls
when decisions must be made?
Is it hearing the laughter of children
when you have none?
Is it shopping for groceries
but only for one?
Or is it going to a movie alone
because there is nothing else to do?
Is it remembering your birthday
two days after it's gone?
Is it turning off the lights
and hearing no breath but your own?
Is this what it means to be free? to be alone? © T. GhostWolf Davidson, January 14, 1975
