Finding Atlantis
Mik Namlieh
I woke this morning to a strange condition
The victim of mysterious regret (I know regret…)
Because while I was dreaming, intuition
Interceded in my dreams to show me
All the sweetness I’ve been trying to forget.
Let me take your hand and give you freedom.
Let me fray beneath your shadow and be gone.
Let me break the golden ties with all your mercy
And hope my willing exile won’t be long.
I remember watching sunlight through the doorway
And thinking I could make it if I ran (and if I ran…)
But what’s the rolling highway to the homeless?
And if I make it to the land of all my daydreams
What’s to say it isn’t better where I am?
Let me run away to somewhere nameless.
Let me break my feet on stones, my hands on you.
Let me take my secrets with me to Atlantis
And start my life again, my daydreams new.
I flew through all the doors, they fled before me,
In search of somewhere I could be at peace (to be at peace…)
And when I’d broken all the doors that held me
The rain soaked through my hair and in my eyes
And I knew this place could offer no release.
Let me leave these shadows in the corners.
Let me rid myself of all these ragged dreams.
Let me burn to ash the tearstains and the terrors
And forget what was forgot and what can’t be.
The sun itself will run to flee the nightfall
And stars fall hard and pock the fields and hills (and scar the hills…)
But nothing lasts forever and words are not insightful
When they don’t remark the change that tears the skyline,
When they do not stop the fall and never will.
Let me count the stars before they flicker.
Let me see the night around me without fear.
Let me touch the face of you who always knew me
And know that with the silence you are near.
The world is wide and somewhere there is freedom,
The freedom to forget your colored eyes (forget your eyes…)
And though I was naïve to so believe them
I don’t regret the sunshine
But it’s time to find my way and say goodbye.
